The early orquesta of 3 to 4 violins and 3 to 4 bandoneóns, a family affair. Edgardo Donato led on violin, his brother Osvaldo on piano and brother Ascanio on cello. Donato soon set the violin aside to conduct.
Domingo Milillo on violin, the brothers Osvaldo and Ascanio on piano and cello, and a 16-year-old accordionist, Bertolín, who became an icon of the orchestra's sound.
The orquesta was rebuilt in 1943 with new musicians and a changed arranging style, then ran with unstable lineups and many pianists passing through the ranks.
